Dizzee Rascal - Sugar and Spice ft. iLL BLU (Official Video)
Dizzee Rascal keeps summer alive with energetic new visuals 'Sugar And Spice' prod by and featuring iLL BLU
This comes ahead of Dizzee's massive shows at Cardiff, Nottingham and Newcastle in October > grab your tickets HERE!!
Following the 20th anniversary of his seminal album “Boy In Da Corner”, grime icon Dizzee Rascal keeps summer alive with uplifting new single “Sugar And Spice'', produced by and featuring iLL BLU. The track’s sunkissed opening hook gives way to Dizzee’s ever-formidable flow, sharing his appreciation for the finer things in life over a swaggering garage beat. The single’s undeniable energy is a pertinent reminder of the talent that established Dizzee as a chart-topping legend, his ability to move freely through styles is unrivaled, as his closing line reminds us of exactly what he’s here to do: “I mash up the dance then dash”.
This comes ahead of 3 huge live shows to mark the 20th Anniversary celebrations of Boy In Da Corner, where Dizzee will be joined by a stellar cast of support acts to join him on the Nottingham, Cardiff and Newcastle legs of the tour.
With his track ‘Bassline Junkie’ being the unofficial national anthem for the new bassline generation Dizzee has enlisted the support of the biggest up and comers in bassline music today. The much lauded rapper has enlisted the help of Bradford bassline heroes Bad Boy Chiller Crew for all new dates, with DJ/Producer extraordinaire TS7 joining the all star cast for the Newcastle and Notts shows. Window Kid - one of the most deservedly hyped up and coming MC’s on the scene right now will be appearing on all dates and Wales’ most exciting grime / hip hop crossover talent Mace The Great will be joining the Cardiff show.
The electrifying show, which sees Dizzee perform the album in its entirety, followed by all his bassline hits such as ‘Bonkers’ and ‘Bassline Junkie’, will coming to Nottingham’s Motorpoint on 6th October, the Cardiff Utilita Arena on 7th October and Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on 8th October.
Brimming with confidence since his return Dizzee commented: "Before I ever did the first show at the 02 Arena I already knew there was no way this could stay just in London. Looking forward to celebrating 20 years of Boy In Da Corner and my musical journey with the whole of the UK. Roll on October!”
On the anniversary itself Dizzee has said: "It's mad how it's 20 years since Boy In Da Corner! That album changed my life and I'm forever thankful to everyone who's shown love in that time”.
Released in July 2003, when the innovative MC and producer was only 18, Boy In Da Corner won the prestigious Mercury Prize and remains THE definitive grime full-length. The critically-acclaimed LP saw Dizzee labeled “the most original and exciting artist to emerge from dance music in a decade,” by the Guardian.
As one of the UK’s most successful and influential rappers of all time, Dizzee Rascal is credited to bringing UK Grime to the masses during its peak in the mid noughties. After Boy In Da Corner catapulted him to international stardom, he has since worked with some of the biggest artists on the planet, such as Calvin Harris, Arctic Monkeys, Shakira, Armand van Helden, Florence and the Machine, will.i.am and Robbie Williams. He also has four UK #1 hit singles to his name - ‘Dance Wiv Me’, ‘Bonkers’, ‘Holiday’ and ‘Dirtee Disco’ - and six consecutive UK ‘Top 20’ albums - Showtime, Maths + English, Tongue ‘n’ Cheek, The Fifth, Raskit and E3 AF.
A welcome extension to the 20th anniversary celebrations for what is a truly legendary album, Dizzee Rascal’s October shows simply cannot be missed.

Death Stranding Timeline
I put together a rough timeline for the overarching narrative of Death Stranding. I was able to piece together some parts of the timeline almost approximately, but admittedly, much of it is based on headcanon and conjecture due to parts of the lore being rather scant. Regardless, I tried to make it fun and I utilized invented details to enrich the worldbuilding. I also put together a few paragraphs explaining my methods in obtaining the more approximate dates. I’ve seen people talking about character age headcanons and attempting to pinpoint the duration of the Death Stranding, and I think I got pretty close to the truth with a few of these. Anyway, enjoy, tell me what you think. The full timeline is below the cut.

March 15th, 2015 - Death Stranding occurs
May 29th, 2015 - Målingen and Lockne Leifsdottir are born
June, 2015 - President Faulkner creates the government organization ‘Bridges’, which is designed to create a network across the fractured America in order to administer aid to the civilian population. Its other, classified purpose is to research the cause of the Death Stranding and to synthesize potential solutions to the social, economic, and infrastructural issues it has caused.
July, 2015 - John Blake McClane leaves the United States Army Special Forces to pursue a career opportunity as head of Bridges security. Much of Bridges’ security personnel is comprised of military veterans.
August, 2015 - President Faulkner is killed during a voidout that obliterates Manhattan Island. The voidout is caused by the death of a stillmother during the preliminary embryonic chiral experimentation trial runs conducted by Bridges, experiments which would go on to become the blueprints for the ‘Bridge Babies’, also known as ‘BB’ units. The existence of the embryonic experimentation being brought to the public eye causes widespread outrage, and the research is discontinued. Following Faulkner’s death, his vice president, Bridget Strand, succeeds the presidency. While the embryonic chiral experimentation is officially discontinued, President Strand continues it in secret, desperate to discover the secrets of the new element ‘chiralium’ and its vast potential to bolster technological development.
September, 2015 - Cliff and Lisa are hit by a drunk driver while driving home one night after attending a play. Both receive serious injuries, Cliff; a shattered collarbone, humerus, and ulna, and Lisa; severe whiplash and head trauma, which leaves her comatose. Miraculously, the 7 month old fetus is largely unharmed.
October, 2015 - Cliff enrolls his family in an experimental medical care program that promises to utilize state of the art technology to provide them the best chance at recovery, as recommended to him by an old military buddy. An emergency C-section is conducted, and the 28 week old Baby Bridges ‘BB’ is placed in a portable pod synchronized with his mother’s heartbeat.
Bridget Strand acts as overseer of the experiments in secret, under the pseudonym Dr. Samsa. She hides her true identity behind a steel masquerade mask.
February, 2016 - Cliff grows increasingly irritated and untrusting of Dr. Samsa as she continues to avoid his questions and lie to him. BB is kept in his pod long past his due date and prevented from growing through the usage of hormone blockers.
December 23rd, 2016 - When John realizes that Cliff’s family is being harvested for chiral experimentation, he warns Cliff of what is going to be done to them. When Cliff tries to escape the facility with his baby, he and his entire family are killed. Baby Bridges is revived by Amelie on the beach, and he is christened ‘Sam’. Bridget Strand makes the decision to raise him as her own, as he was no longer a BB candidate after Cliff released him from his pod. After this unnatural resuscitation, the laws of nature are made gravely upset. Sam becomes the first repatriate and DOOMS sufferer, one who can travel between Earth and Hades and detect the spectral dead using his 5 senses. The dead, the Beached Things, return physically to the land of the living and claim more human souls, dragging the damned with them as they returned to the other side. Timefall, rain that rapidly ages anything it touches, begins to fall in showers across the American continent.
December 31st, 2016 - Sam Strand is ‘born’
March, 2017 - John Blake McClane fakes his death with the help of President Strand. He returns to the broken political scene under the pseudonym Die-Hardman and becomes a personal aide to the president.
October 1st, 2017 - Fragile (Giselle Depardieu) is born
November 8th, 2019 - Higgs Monaghan is born
April, 2020 - The United Cities of America (UCA) is established, as the state governments and boundaries have all but crumpled as a result of continuous voidouts, and only a few key cities remain.
June, 2020 - Deadman earns the position of Bridges head coroner as a result of his government-sponsored artificial personhood program.
May, 2033 - Lucy Dimmonds earns a Bachelor’s degree in psychology
March, 2034 - Lucy Dimmonds becomes a licensed therapist
February, 2038 - Sam has his first meeting with his therapist, Lucy Dimmonds. In the following months, the two begin to form a close and unprofessional relationship.
December, 2039 - Sam and Lucy are married, and Lucy retires from her practice.
February, 2040 - Lucy contracts DOOMS after becoming pregnant with her and Sam’s child Louise. She begins to have horrible visions of the apocalypse, which Bridget assures her are real portents of the future.
September, 2040 - Lucy chooses to commit suicide in order to avoid bringing a child into the world where the apocalypse is imminent. Her death causes a voidout, and Sam, who was busy making deliveries at the time, returns home to a smoking crater; all that’s left of his hometown. The survivors eye him warily and he can tell that they blame him for the disaster. In shame and grief, Sam resigns from Bridges and begins work as an independent porter. He changes his name to Sam Porter Bridges.
January 11th, 2045 - President Bridget Strand dies of metastasized uterine cancer. The plot of Death Stranding begins.
References and Reasoning Used in Creating Timeline
Deadman mentions that WW1 took place more than 100 years ago, meaning that the present day in Death Stranding is past 2014-2018
Deadman mentions that WW2 took place a century ago, which places the timeframe of Death Stranding’s narrative anywhere from 2039-2045. I opted for the late estimate as to make Sam a little older and give the timeline some room to breathe
Based on appearance, behavior, and age in relation to other characters (he was a baby when Cliff, Die-Hardman, and Bridget were all mature adults), I placed Sam at around 28-30 years old. If he were any older, characters such as Die-Hardman and Bridget would appear much too young in the present day. This would also make the period in which the Death Stranding occurred around 30 years.
Deadman explains that Clifford Unger took part in the Kosovo War, the Afghanistan War, and the Iraq War. This would place his years of service from 1999 to right before the Death Stranding and Sam’s birth, around 2015. We know his military career did not begin any earlier, as there is no mention of him serving during the Balkan Wars or Persian Gulf War. Assuming that he was around 18 for his first deployment during the Kosovo War, it can be pretty reasonably inferred that Cliff was born around 1979, and was therefore around 36-37 when he was killed. This lines up nicely with the age restrictions surrounding combat in the United States Army Special Forces (ages 20-36). Essentially, Cliff must have been 36-37 in 2016, for if he was any older he would not have been only recently retired from combat, and if he was any younger he would not have been old enough to have served during the Kosovo War.
Bridget Strand’s age is determined similarly. As both vice president and president, she would have had to have been 35 years of age or older, if she was vice president in 2012, she would have had to have been at least 35. I placed her at 37, which is still very young, but not quite the youngest on record. But, since she assumes the presidency in 2016 following the death of the president, she would have become president at 41 years of age, which would make her the record-holder of the title of youngest American president. Assuming she is 41 in 2016, she would be 70 years of age at the time of her death in 2045, which seems reasonable.
Most other aspects of the timeline are built around these key definable pieces of the puzzle and are subject to change as more lore is revealed.
Essentially, this is full of headcanons that I’ll be happy to alter if and when we get more information.

A(N ESTIMATED ) TIMELINE FOR SHERLOCK
PLEASE NOTE: John’s Blog and the show contradict each other at times, in these cases, the show will be taken as canon. In times where the show contradicts itself, if other media cannot solve the mix up, then estimates based on what makes the most real world sense will be used to find an answer.
ADDITIONALLY: I don’t want to get flooded with everyone's headcanons for things where estimates had to be made; but i greatly welcome canon information that might have been missed or ( ie: The Game is Now Escape Room ) have been unable to experience. I also do not consider interviews with cast and crew as reliable sources for the most part, as these answers have also changed throughout the years. It will only be given consideration if nothing else contradicts it and was said without the air of taking the mickey out of us as many interactions with fans have. They like to say things just to get us going. So I consider this less of a word of god and more of a word of the clown.
BIRTHDATES
DATES OF MAJOR EVENTS
NOTES
TL;DR
SOURCES
THIS VERSION IS THE REBLOG FRIENDLY VERSION OF A TIMELINE MADE ON MY OTHER BLOG ( SEE TAGS )
BIRTHDATES:
SHERLOCK HOLMES: January 6th, 1981 ( stated in The Casebook ); making him younger than the actor playing him. However, this does conflict slightly as Sherlock states he was nine years old when Carl Powers drowned, and the article claims it was in 1989, which places his birth in 1980 instead. This was before they gave Sherlock a canonical birthdate in any media, however, and for the purposes of this, we’ll be using the casebook age, and claiming Sherlock was either rounding or misremembering due to the fact his childhood memories are not entirely factual. Additionally, the headstone image shown in The Sherlock Chronicles says 1977, but the previous date is the one considered to be Canon. ( See Notes )
JOHN WATSON: unknown, but somewhere in the 70′s. A popular fandate is March 30th. Judging off of the actor’s age, possibly around 1971, but maybe younger as many actors are playing younger than themselves.
MYCROFT HOLMES: Exact date unknown, but he is seven years older than Sherlock, which puts him to be born around 1973-1974. Which makes him canonically younger than the actor playing him. 02/25/19 EDIT: According to sources, Mycroft is given a birthdate in the Escape Room based on the series, October 20th, 1968. While the October date works fine, year for this doesn't fit the "Seven Years Older" claim on the show. The oldest birth date given for Sherlock is 1977 and that would make Mycroft nine years older than Sherlock, not seven. The year given falls closer to Mark Gatiss' actual age, and leaves me inclined to think that perhaps year for the game isn't entirely factual. That being said, there's still no reason he couldn't have been born October 20th. Based on the "Seven Years Older" claim, stated in show, the best guess is October 20th, 1974.
EURUS HOLMES: Exact date unknown, but she is a year younger than Sherlock, which makes her born somewhere in 1982-1983 depending on when she was conceived.
MARY WATSON: Unknown, but based on the actress’ age, likely 1974; but maybe younger as many actors are playing younger than themselves.
ROSAMUND “ROSIE” WATSON: January 2015. We can infer this because based on how far along Mary was at her wedding, Rosie would have been conceived Mid-April, and if she was relatively ontime, she’d be born late January.
DATES OF NOTE:
REDBEARD / THE MUSGRAVE FIRE: Between 1988-1989 roughly; there is no clear indication on the show as to when these events took place. We can only summarize based on what we know about other events. We know that Sherlock "began" solving crimes at age nine ( see below ) due to Carl Powers; and we know that Sherlock had to be younger than ten years old during the events told in The Final Problem. Assuming that the tragic events of Carl Powers triggered something in him, making him take extra notice due to his own past experiences with Eurus and Victor; but still allowing time for all the events to take place and enough time to have passed for Sherlock to have rewritten the story so completely in his head where he can be suspicious but not fully triggered; I'd place him as seven or eight during these events.
THE CARL POWERS DEATH: 1990
*see notes for Sherlock’s birthday
UNIVERSITY: Sherlock attended the same school as Sebastian Wilkes in the early 2000s. Exact years, and if they were at school for the same duration of time is unknown; but he last saw the man roughly eight years ( if Wilkes can be trusted for accuracy ) prior to The Blind Banker, which would be somewhere in 2002/2003
SHERLOCK AND JOHN’S FIRST MEETING: January 29, 2010
CASE: A STUDY IN PINK: January 30th, 2010
CASE: THE BLIND BANKER: March 23rd-March 27th; inferred by Sherlock deducting the incorrect date on Wilkes’ watch and the on-screen passage of time.
Sherlock traveled to and from Minsk sometime between the events of The Blind Banker and The Great Game; based on the dates given, as well as the close air dates of the two episodes, it’s to be believed that Sherlock left and returned from Minsk on March 28th. This is also made plausible due to the funding Sherlock seems to have for himself, his impatience and the fact that it is a three hour flight each way.
BAKER STREET BOMBING: March 28th; evening
CASE: THE GREAT GAME: March 29 - April 1st; we know this based on both the blog posts and Sherlock updating his website with the case answers. However, the blog post was edited from the original date of April 6th after it’s initial publication. The reason for this is unknown.
DURATION OF SERIES ONE: January 29th, 2010 - March 29th, 2010: three months exactly.
MISC: John and Sarah go to New Zealand for a week and breakup ( April 2010 )
TRIP TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE ( A SCANDAL IN BELGRAVIA ): September 15th, 2010
IRENE MEETING: September 15, 2010
BAKER STREET CHRISTMAS PARTY: December 25th 2010
IDENTIFYING IRENE’S BODY: December 25th, 2010
IRENE REVEALS SHE’S ALIVE: December 31st, 2010
JOHN PUBLISHES THE CASE: March 12th, 2011;
We don’t know the exact amount of time transpiring between New Years Eve and this point. Based on his track record, it’s likely January 15th is meant to be the date that Sherlock is told Irene is in Witness protection ( John seems to publish immediately, regardless of how tasteful it might be to reveal details of recent cases ). This gap would cover everything from Irene arriving at Baker Street, Sherlock going to the airfield, him beating Irene at the game, and saving her in Karachi. It’s likely, considering how erratic Sherlock is by early March with no cases, that the day John tells Sherlock the lie, is around late January / early February. Allowing Sherlock enough time to have done all of this as well as get riled up in time for Baskerville, which had to have occured before March 16th
CASE: THE HOUNDS OF BASKERVILLE: Early March 2011; by best estimates given as John doesn’t take too long to post his accounts of the events, and he had already finished typing up the case prior.
BASKERVILLE CASE POSTED: March 16th, 2011. This is also the same date Moriarty hacks John’s blog with a video of him inside of their flat. Suggesting he’s already free from his interrogation shown at the end of The Hounds of Baskerville.
The dates surrounding Sherlock’s death and The Reichenbach Fall are highly questionable as the episode, the blog, and logistics for certain events all contradict each other. Joe Lidster, who wrote John’s real world blog, has comically said that Moriarty hacking the blog gave it a virus that messed with the dating system, as a tongue in cheek explanation. Meaning if we were to take that as fact, all the dates in the blog could be false. The newspapers shown in the episode, have dates that suggest different things. I’ve chosen the one which makes the most sense, based on the news reel clip on John’s blog, the statement that he went to therapy three months later, the school holiday schedule for the abduction of the Ambassador’s children and several other people’s attempts to sort this all out. An alternative version can be found here.
MORIARTY’S ROBBERIES: Late March, by best guess. Possibly a bit earlier.
MORIARTY’S TRIAL / RELEASE: April 2011
MORIARTY’S PLAN TO RUIN SHERLOCK: June 12-June 14th, 2011
MORIARTY COMMITS SUICIDE / SHERLOCK FAKES HIS: June 14th/15th; the 15th is the more commonly believed date.
JOHN CONFIRMS ON HIS BLOG: June 16th, 2011
JOHN VISITS SHERLOCK’S GRAVE: Mid/Late June 2011
TOTAL SERIES TWO DURATION: March 29th, 2010 ( The Pool ) - June 2011. Fifteen Months / One Year and Three Months
SHERLOCK DISMANTLES MORIARTY’S NETWORK: June 2011 - Late October / Early November 2013
MARY MAKES HER FIRST COMMENT ON JOHN’S BLOG: April 20th, 2013
JOHN POSTS OLD CASES: April 2013 - October 5th, 2013
WEBISODE ( MANY HAPPY RETURNS ): October 5th, 2013
SHERLOCK RETURNS: Late October / Early November 2013
JOHN ALMOST BURNED ALIVE: Guy Fawkes Day, November 5th, 2013
CASE: THE EMPTY HEARSE / #SHERLOCK LIVES: November 7th, 2013
JOHN AND SHERLOCK’S VARIOUS CASES: November 2013 - May 2014
Another case of Blog vs Screen; John and Mary’s wedding invites are shown throughout The Sign of Three with the date May 13th, while John’s blog states it was in August. The blog is deemed incorrect in this case, as well as his entries about the cases Sherlock reads at the Wedding
ROSIE WATSON IS CONCEIVED: Mid April 2014
JOHN AND MARY’S WEDDING: May 13th, 2014; ( see above note about The Sign of Three )
His Last Vow has the opposite problem as the series finale prior, in which next to no dates are given. We only know the dates at the end of the episode. Just that the events of John getting restless, Sherlock using again, Magnussen visiting, Sherlock being shot, Sherlock leaving early to confront Mary, Sherlock leaving to confront Magnussen, John confronting Mary, Sherlock being taken to Hospital again and being released all happen between May 13th and December 25th, 2014. It can take a couple months for gunshot victims to be released from Hospital, depending on the severity. Applying Mycroft Rules and Television Rules we know that Sherlock likely didn’t stay the time a regular patient would have. Knowing Sherlock he would have wanted out as soon as possible. We know John and Mary were at odds for a bit, reconciling on Christmas. Plus there needed to be time for Sherlock to fake date Janine, John to reach the level of restlessness there was and get Charles’ attention. So these next few dates are estimates. The majority of the scenes shown in episode are out of order and happen in two time periods, before Mary’s revealed and Christmas Day.
JOHN BREAKS INTO THE DRUG DEN / MAGNUSSEN VISITING BAKER STREET: September / October 2014
SHERLOCK GETTING SHOT: September / October 2014
SHERLOCK SNEAKING OUT OF HOSPITAL TO MEET MAGNUSSEN AND MARY: Early/Mid October 2014; presuming based on deleted scenes depicting a Sherlock who was unable to move for a while in recovery that this was maybe days or weeks later when it was deemed safe to wake him up from medically induced coma.
JOHN CONFRONTING MARY: October 2014 ( same day as above )
SHERLOCK RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL: Mid-December 2014, inferred by how the family and friends act as if it was more recent while at the Holmes’ family home.
SHERLOCK SHOOTS MAGNUSSEN: December 25th, 2014
SHERLOCK BOARDS THE PLANE / MORIARTY’S VIDEO GOES LIVE: December 31st, 2014 / January 2nd, 2015; the show itself provides two different accounts of this. Mycroft states in His Last Vow, that Sherlock was in holding for a week, placing the scene at the tarmac in Early January 2015; however, the introduction to The Abominable Bride places the scene with onscreen text in 2014 still. The only way both can be remotely accurate is if Mycroft is rounding up, and it’s December 31st, 2014.
DURATION OF SERIES THREE: Fall 2013 - Winter 2014; just over one calendar year.
CASE: THE ABOMINABLE BRIDE ( REAL WORLD ): December 31st, 2014 / January 2nd, 2015 ( see above )
The first scene of The Six Thatchers, along with the real world scenes of The Abominable Bride and the final scenes of His Last Vow are the same day.
SHERLOCK IS ACQUITTED OF CRIMES: December 31st, 2014 / January 2nd, 2015 ( see above )
ROSIE WATSON IS BORN: Mid/Late January 2015, assuming she was relatively on time.
ROSIE WATSON’S BAPTISM: March / April 2015; based on many modern traditions, the baby’s age and the style of clothing worn by the attendees.
The Six Thatchers covers the majority of one calendar year, no exact dates are given but we can surmise things based on the shown development of Rosie Watson ( whom we know to be a year old by the end of The Final Problem ). Rosie is shown to have full head support and movement before Mary dies, which is something that happens around six months. This would mean Mary’s still alive around June 2015. Allowing for time in which Mary is on the lam, leading to the aquarium, the following are my best guesses for events.
MARY IS MISSING: Summer 2015 ( how long she was gone for is unclear )
MARY IS BACK IN LONDON: September 2015
NORBURY SHOOTS MARY: October 2015
SHERLOCK RECEIVES MARY’S VIDEO / JOHN’S LETTER: Late October. 2015 / Possibly Early November 2015
CASE: THE LYING DETECTIVE: Possibly Mid-December 2015 / Early January 2016
Another case of ‘we don’t know how long’; we know Sherlock returns from hospital on his birthday, but the dates in between are unclear. Nor do we know how long John and Sherlock didn’t speak for. Sherlock would have needed a major detox, as well as treatment for his injuries. Based on the timeframe, it’s unlikely he attended any form of inpatient rehab outside of whatever the hospital had on location due to his injuries. Possibly due to either Mycroft pulling strings, or the more likely, Sherlock refusing and signing himself out when able.
We also know that the jump from The Lying Detective and The Final Problem can’t be too long. Even though Sherlock has had a magical recovery from all ailments between episodes, it’s extremely unlikely that John sat on the ‘I was almost killed by your secret sister’ tidbit for a few weeks. Meaning these episodes likely happen very shortly after one another. It also feels unlikely that Eurus would make herself known to John and then wait weeks/months to then begin acting out again once the secret was revealed.
JOHN AND SHERLOCK’S REUNITING: January 6th, 2016
JOHN’S FINAL THERAPY SESSION WITH EURUS: Somewhere between January 6th - January 13th 2016; assuming he went about once a week.
CASE: THE FINAL PROBLEM: January 13th, 2015 - January 20th, 2016; presuming John was able to tell Sherlock after ( not knowing how long he was knocked out for ); and allowing Sherlock and John some time to figure out their next move. This would also cover the attack on Baker Street and the entire event on Sherrinford Island.
ROSIE WATSON’S FIRST BIRTHDAY: Mid/Late January, 2016
OTHER NOTES:
The Entire Series spans six years.
The Sherlock Timeline runs one year behind real world time, with the show’s episodes in universe during 2016, aired in January 2017
Sherlock Holmes would be 29 in A Study In Pink, and 35 by The Final Problem based on the Casebook date. 30 and 36 by The Carl Powers age. and 33 and 39 by The Sherlock Chronicles age. All would make him younger than Benedict Cumberbatch, born 1976.
An incorrect headstone, as seen in The Sherlock Chronicles would make sense with the fact that until The Lying Detective, John states he never knew his birthdate. Which, had his tombstone had it, would make little sense. Providing an in universe reason for this odd lack of knowledge on John’s part. Perhaps John merely guessed? Maybe Mycroft knew he wouldn’t want it known, so they put a fake date? Especially as Mycroft knew he was alive. Otherwise, this is just another plot inconsistency --- which, I’m getting quite tired of.
We don’t know when Mary and John first met, but we can infer they’ve known each other about a year from dialogue in The Six Thatchers when John is attempting to propose.
Alternate timelines surrounding The Reichenbach Fall sometimes claim the following dates: Sherlock Testifies: May 9th, 2011; Moriarty is freed and visits 221B: September 20th, 2011; The Kidnapping: November 19th, 2011; Sherlock Falls: November 20th, 2011. This comes from a couple on screen newspaper clippings; but they are contradictory to the stated three month interval stated. It’s up to fans to decide which version they feel is more accurate.
More of a musing, but it’s kind of interesting how many times John immediately runs to the internet to share the details of really recent cases fresh in the public’s mind; in contrast to Watson’s monologue in The Abominable Bride about how careful he is to avoid doing that very thing. Which is even funnier if you view it through the long standing canon lens of John is an Unreliable Narrator
TL;DR:
SERIES ONE: January 29th, 2010 - March 29th, 2010
SERIES TWO: March 29th, 2010 - June 15th, 2011
SERIES THREE: November 2013 - December 2014
SERIES FOUR: December 2014 - January 2016
WEBISODE: October 10th, 2013
SPECIAL: December 2014

Life and Decisions
I want to start this blog by apologizing for the delay. We took my son on vacation for his birthday and it took a very big toll on me. I was in flare up for a little over a week and basically just slept the entire time as my blood pressure was hovering around 80/50 and my pulse was struggling to get above 50. These flare ups take a lot out of me, but thankfully I have a wonderful family, son, boyfriend, and best friend who all helped to take care of me and made sure I was ok. Thankfully I was able to pull out of it on my own and I didn't have to go to the ER for fluids this time, progress! So, I've talked a lot about Dirk's side of the family, so I'd like to introduce you to my mother's side.
My grandmother, Carlene, grew up in Bloomfield, IA and was an honors english teacher for years. She passed away on June 24th, 2019, after fighting a thoracic aneurysm. She married my grandpa, Phil, on Christmas day 1965, right before he was deployed to Vietnam. Grandpa was also raised in Bloomfield. They had 3 children, my mom, my aunt Trisha, and finally, their son, Chad (you will find out why I refuse to call him "uncle" later in my blog). They grew up very poor, but full of family love and friendship. Everyone got together for birthdays, holidays, and when we moved to Bloomfield, we would have family dinners on Sundays. It was during this time that I met a lot of the people who would influence my life and decisions later in life. One of these people would have more of an impact than I could even imagine.
I met Austin Owen when I was 3 months old, right after he was born. Our mother's were best friends in high school, and she dated his uncle, Michael, all throughout her high school years. We were also around his paternal family, the Finneran's, quite often during my first few years of life. We would reconnect during the summer between my 6th and 7th grade years, at 12 years old, and we fell in love that summer. A love that would not let go until April 2020, at age 32, 20 years. When we moved back to Bloomfield in December 2002, we decided that we would be together, and we were, for about a year. He broke up with my right before homecoming 2003, and right after my life started to really unravel.
In October 2003, we lost our home in Glenwood, IA to a complete loss fire. Dirk had still been staying there during the week as both of our labradors, Lacy and Drake, were still there and he was still working in Omaha. He had been in Bloomfield that weekend, and the fire happened late Sunday night, after he had gotten home and gotten to bed. Thankfully, the dogs were able to wake him up and alert him of the fire. This should have been the end, but of course, it wasn't. The insurance company refused to pay, and instead, had the fire marshall investigate, and they brought Dirk up on arson and insurance fraud charges, something that would prevent them from getting a mortgage in Bloomfield until the charges were cleared up. This would prove to be the start of the end of my parents marriage.
My mother spent hours upon hours researching, reading the court transcripts and expert reports, doing more work than the lawyers. While she was doing this, Dirk had a girlfriend in Glenwood, and another in Des Moines, which was not anything new as this was a pretty constant thing for him, and he never really tried to hide it, from any of us. At one point, Dirk left while Kaitie and I were at school, draining the bank account, and just disappearing for a while, just to come back a week or so later with gifts, the typical Dirk way of apologizing without actually saying "I'm sorry". Right after this incident came the final straw for my mother. She and Dirk were in a verbal altercation in the living room of our rental house on N. West street in Bloomfield. I was in my bedroom trying to drown out the noise, until I heard Dirk say "you're a fucking cunt". That was it, I was DONE! I came out of my room, pissed as hell, and proceeded to chuck the remote control at his head. I missed, my aim for throwing was never any good. He came barreling at me and I ran into my bedroom, slamming my door behind me. He ripped my door off, pinned me down on my bed, all 120lbs of me underneath his hulking 250+lbs body. He had my by the throat with one hand and his other he had drawn back into a fist, I braced myself for what was coming. Thankfully, my mother came in screaming at him that she was going to call the police. She actually had to insert herself between his fist and me. He released my throat after what seemed like forever, and walked out of the front door. I remember having to remind myself to breathe, as I had been holding my breath during the entire altercation. I cried, she cried, we cried together on my bed holding each other, another bullet thankfully missed because of the quick actions of my mother.
Shortly after this, I started dating a man named Brock. He was smart, funny, and athletic, which is what I wanted at that time. I was so excited to have him meet my family, as Dirk had been back for a couple of days. I brought Brock into the front door and was greeted by mom and Dirk sitting on the couch, Dirks bags and suitcases all packed and ready to go. The first and only thing Dirk said was "I'm leaving", I turned to Brock and said "This is my family", not sure whether to be sad, embarrassed, happy, I had so many emotions flowing through me, it was a lot for my 17 year old mind to process in that instant. Even though I had been miserable, I had always feared being a "statistic", being in a divorce situation, splitting holidays (which turned out to never be an issue), having step-parents/siblings. What would life look like now? How would we do being on our own? He wasn't going to stick around Bloomfield, he made that perfectly clear. He ended up moving to Des Moines, in with a woman who he was proud to have "turned" from being a lesbian to being with him, *insert eye roll here*. He was also seeing a woman named Dawn, from Glenwood during this time. This would be the last time we would all be together under the same roof as a "family".
After Dirk left for good, mom took a job at the local newspaper so that she could be around more and could continue coaching us and being there for everything. This took a huge financial toll on her, and I had gotten my CNA during my junior year in high school, so I got a job at the local care center, working 2-10 on weekends and making around $12/hr, which was amazing for a high school kid. I tried to pay for anything I wanted beyond the essentials. My aunts Jodi and Gina, were gracious enough to pay for my senior pictures, class ring, and graduation materials, as we could not afford it. I continued to maintain my 4.3 GPA, remained active in all of my activities, clubs, choir etc. I took a lot of college classes my junior and senior year, graduating high school as a first semester sophomore in college. I was a very busy kid, but it kept my mind busy so I didn't have to deal with the mental and emotional pain, the physical pain from my medical conditions was still plaguing me, but I'd always been told to "rub some dirt in it and walk it off", so that's the approach I took to every aspect of life. Much easier said than done. I made some horrible decisions during this time.
My last year of high school and first year of college were a big party that included drinking, a lot, smoking pot when I could, smoking cigarettes, sneaking out, and sleeping around trying to find love and connection in anyone I could. I hated myself for a long time because of these decisions, decisions that I have now forgiven myself for because I know where they came from. No, I AM NOT condoning these actions, I'm just giving myself some grace, something I struggled with for years and years. Grace is such a powerful thing, not only to receive, but to give as well. It is amazing how much you can achieve when you learn about grace and its impact in your life. Grace saved me, and it continues to save me every day.

Brian McKnight
Brian McKnight (born June 5, 1969) is an American R&B singer-songwriter, arranger, producer, and musician. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays eight instruments including piano, guitar, bass guitar, percussion, trombone, tuba, flugelhorn and trumpet. He is one of the very few leggiero tenors in the pop genre. McKnight is most recognized for his strong falsetto and belting range. McKnight's work has earned him 16 Grammy Awards nominations, though he has never won. He is third only to Morten Lindberg and Snoop Dogg for the record of most Grammy nominations without a win.
Biography
1969–1989: Early life and career beginnings
McKnight was born in Buffalo, New York. His musical career began in childhood when he became a member of his church choir.
1990–1997: Mercury Records
In 1990, McKnight's older brother, Claude McKnight III, and his band, Take 6, signed a record deal with Warner Brothers. This encouraged McKnight to shop his own demo tapes and by the age of 19, he signed his first recording deal with Mercury Records subsidiary, Wing Records. In 1992, Brian McKnight was released, and his self-titled debut album peaked at fifty-eight in the Billboard 200 chart, which primarily featured the ballad (and top twenty single) "One Last Cry". It was followed by two more albums for Mercury, 1995's I Remember You and 1997's Anytime. Anytime, McKnight's final album with Mercury, sold over two million copies and was nominated for a Grammy. The video for "Anytime", directed by Darren Grant, was nominated for Best Male Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. In 1997, McKnight recorded "Remember the Magic" for Disney World's 25th anniversary.
1997–2003: Motown Records
McKnight signed with Motown in 1998 and released the Christmas album Bethlehem, the first of five albums he released on Motown. In 1999, McKnight released Back at One, his most successful album to date, which eventually went on to sell over 3 million copies. Also "Back at One" is one of four of McKnight's studio albums to reach the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, reaching to #7 on October 9, 1999.
2004–2012: Warner Brothers and television/radio career
In 2004, McKnight co-wrote with Australian Soul artist Guy Sebastian the song "Wait", off Sebastian's Beautiful Life album.
In October 2007, McKnight made his Broadway debut in the show Chicago.
From 2006 to 2010 he hosted a radio show, The Brian McKnight Morning Show with Pat Prescott on KTWV The Wave in Los Angeles, CA. The show was briefly simulcast on KHJZ-FM, Smooth Jazz 95.7 The Wave in Houston, TX from 6AM-9AM CST.
On January 26, 2009, McKnight hosted "The Brian McKnight Show" from 7PM-Midnight on 98.7 KISS FM in New York City.
In 2009, he appeared in the second season of Celebrity Apprentice. Each celebrity played to raise money for the charity of his or her choice; McKnight elected to play for Youthville USA.
From September 2009 to May 2010, McKnight served as the media personality and hosted The Brian McKnight Show, a late night talk show billed as a combination of talk and variety, aired in syndication. The show was cancelled on May 29, 2010 after one season.
On March 31, 2011 McKnight sang the National Anthem for MLB Opening Day in Cincinnati, Ohio with his sons Brian, Jr. and Niko. He had previously sung the National Anthem for the 1997 NBA All-Star Game in Cleveland, Ohio, Game 6 of the 2002 World Series in Anaheim, California, near his Los Angeles home, and the 2005 Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Detroit. McKnight has also made numerous other "National Anthem" appearances throughout his career. On October 22, 2012 McKnight sang "God Bless America" in the 7th inning of Game 7 of the National League Champion Series in San Francisco, California.
On April 23, 2012 McKnight posted to YouTube "If You're Ready To Learn", which has been characterized by Billboard as a "filthy jam." Billboard selected this lyric from the work to quote: "Let me show you how your p—y works/Since you didn't bring it to me first." Other media outlets such as MTV, the Toronto Sun, and NewMediaRockstars have also written about McKnight's recent, more adult-oriented efforts. Shortly after the single's release, McKnight and known humor website "Funny or Die" revealed that the single was a collaboration between the two parties. McKnight would later explain that he wrote the parody as a commentary on the state of R&B, which he noted was in a period of degradation overall with famous radio station 98.7 Kiss FM shuttering and hit singles being inferior quality music, among other ailments.
2015: Brian McKnight Music LLC / Kobalt
On August 14, 2015 McKnight released the single "Uh Oh Feeling" as the first track to be taken from his upcoming studio album Better, which will be released on his own label Brian McKnight Music LLC via Kobalt Label Services. "Better" was released on February 26, 2016, the album was followed by positive reviews including fan comments retweeted via McKnight's Twitter profile.
2016: An Evening With Brian McKnight / SoNo Recording Group
On September 23, 2016 McKnight released his first live CD, DVD, and BluRay collection entitled "An Evening With" in partnership with independent recording label The SoNo Recording Group through the Universal Music Group. The concert was recorded in Los Angeles at the historic Saban Theatre. The release includes fourteen songs performed live with his full band plus three newly written and recorded songs. The first single "Everything" reached the top twenty on the national Adult Contemporary charts in September 2016. The CD version of the concert debuted on the Billboard (magazine) R&B chart at number thirteen as a Hot Shot Debut. Also included is a duet with Gino Vannelli on the song "Brothers In The End". The Blu-ray and DVD version of the release premiered on the Billboard (magazine) Music DVD chart at number nine.
Personal life
McKnight was married to former singer and song writer Julie McKnight in 1990. Brian and Julie have 2 children: Brian Jr and Niko. McKnight divorced Julie in 2003.
Religion
Brian McKnight was raised a Seventh-day Adventist. He grew up attending Emmanuel Temple. He also attended Oakwood College (now University), a Seventh-Day Adventist university in Huntsville, Alabama, from 1987–1989. McKnight explains, concerning his musical beginnings in the church:
"I'm the fifth generation of Seventh Day Adventists and the youngest of four brothers. When I was still very small, we formed a gospel quartet. Our models were the great gospel groups, the Swan Silvertones and Mighty Clouds of Joy. The McKnight brothers were serious singers. The reputation went out: these boys could shout. My big brothers—Claude (a part of the gospel group Take 6), Freddie and Michael—man, they were my heroes. Each was a leader in his own right. Outside church, they listened to jazz. Church music thrilled me, but jazz stimulated me."

Bianca Elaine Lebron
Missing Since: November 7, 2001
Missing From: Bridgeport, Connecticut
Sex: Female
Race/Ethnicity: Hispanic/Latino
Missing Age: 10 years old
Current Age: 29 years old
Height and Weight: 4’11” and 115 lbs.
Distinctive Physical Features: Brown hair, hazel eyes, birthmark on her forehead
Clothing and Accessories: Beige pants, a beige and green shirt, dark blue jeans, black boots
Transportation: May have stepped into an old brown van/minivan with several sanded areas, tinted windows and chrome trim on its sides.
Circumstances of Disappearance: Bianca Elaine Lebron lived in Bridgeport, Connecticut close to the Milford and Trumbull Malls. She lived with her mother Carmelita Torres and her stepfather, Angelo Garcia. Carmelita had an amicable relationship with Bianca’s biological father, Wilberto Lebron.
People described Bianca as having high self-esteem and being very outgoing. She loved to sing and dance. She loved to play teacher with the younger children in her family. She enjoyed shopping at the mall and her favorite color was purple.
Bianca was a fifth grade student at Elias Howe School on Clinton Avenue, where she did very well. It was very unusual for her to miss school for any reason. She was never known to skip class.
Bianca went to school on November 7, 2001. She was waiting in line to enter the school when she told her teacher and her friends that her uncle was going to take her shopping that day. She invited her friends to come but they declined.
At 8:30 a.m., Bianca got into a dark colored vehicle with tinted windows, driven by an adult male. Classes had not started yet.
Most of the witnesses who saw Bianca get into the van were children. The driver was depicted as a Hispanic male who appeared to be between 20-30 years old. They said he was between 5’8 and 5’11 with an average build. He had medium brown skin. He had short, black curly hair with sideburns that went down to his chin. He had brown eyes and a prominent nose. He wore a beard. He had scratches on the left side of his nose and on his right cheek. He did not try to conceal his face or clothes from witnesses.
The school community assumed the man was Bianca’s uncle. They did nothing to prove the man’s identity, and let Bianca go with him without question.
Bianca’s family members would eventually tell authorities that the young girl did not have an uncle. They do not know anyone who owns a van similar to the one the man drove.
Bianca’s teacher marked her as absent that day, so school administrators did not recognize she was missing until the next day. The school was heavily criticized for how they treated Bianca that day. People were particularly upset that the young girl was allowed to go with an unknown adult without anyone verifying his identity. Bianca’s teacher was suspended with pay after the incident. New attendance policies and security measures were put in place after the abduction. The school has since closed, boarded up, and abandoned.
Bianca’s family noticed she was missing about 4:30 pm on November 7th, 2001. They initially thought the girl was at a friend’s house and that she forgot to call. The girl often went to relatives’ houses after school, so her family wasn’t concerned. She had even disappeared overnight before, but was eventually found at a friend’s house. When Bianca didn’t come home by 8:30 p.m., Carmelita became concerned. She called the authorities and reported the girl missing at 10:24 pm that night.
An immediate nationwide search occurred. Her family put up several flyers for her. Bridgeport Police and the Center for Missing and Exploited Children also hung up flyers. Flyers were posted on the front door of her home, her family painted “Bianca we love you” on the side of the house. Yellow ribbons were placed at the entrance of the school in remembrance of the girl.
Bianca was featured on several television shows. She was featured on America’s Most Wanted in February of 2002. It took months for the young girl to be profiled because the show had focused on 9/11 up to that point.
Bianca’s mother had the girl declared legally dead so she could sue the school for wrongful death. The suit also listed the assistant principal and the teacher involved as defendants. The City of Bridgeport settled and paid the girl’s family $750,000 due to negligence.
Bianca’s mother believes the girl is still alive.
Law enforcement does not suspect Bianca’s mother, father, or stepfather in the case.
In late April of 2002, police announced that they wanted to question Jason Gonzalez, a 20 year old, in the case. Jason’s original last name was “Lara.” At first the investigators stressed that he was not considered a suspect in the case; they stated he was an acquaintance of the girl and may be able to help find her.
Jason resembled the sketch of the Hispanic man in the van. His friend owned a van that was similar to the one Bianca got into on November 7th. He lived in Bridgeport at the time Bianca went missing. He left the city about a month after the young girl went missing. Bianca’s great uncle was dating Jason’s mother. The young girl met Jason due to this relationship.
Bianca’s loved ones stated Jason was Bianca’s “secret boyfriend.” Her friends stated she had a crush on the older boy. The man saw the young girl frequently. They had been seen kissing.
Sonia, Bianca’s grandmother stated that she felt Bianca was familiar with Jason and probably trusted him enough to leave the school with him. Bianca’s great aunt, Nancy Reboira commented, “We think they got the right person. He looks just like the guy in the sketch.”
Jason’s fiancee, Corey Vitti, says that these allegations are false. They had been together for three years at the time. Corey claims she saw the girl in passing a couple times during the summer before her disappearance. Corey stated that she was with Jason when he was with the young girl. Corey and Jason have a son, Jordan. The accusations led to a feud between the two families.
By October 2003, police still had not questioned Jason about the case. By that point, he had gone to jail on drug charges.
In November of 2003, Jason called the Bridgeport police and denied any knowledge or involvement in Bianca’s case. The police traced his call to Fort Myers, Florida. They went to the address they could locate for him, but realized he had moved. They obtained a photo of him and learned he was using the last name Gonzalez instead of Lara. During their search, they found out he was dating a 53 year old, who told them if anything ever happened to her, Jason did it and that she felt he was capable of violence. She said she overheard Jason talking to a mutual friend and saying he wanted a younger girlfriend.
Jason was eventually found and arrested for an unrelated charge of second-degree forgery (he used the name Gonzalez while turning in a fingerprint card instead of using his actual last name, Lara). The police pursued these charges because they hoped that they could transfer the man to Bridgeport for questioning after he was arrested.
Jason was eventually questioned intensely about the young girl’s disappearance, but he was not very cooperative. A police spokeswoman, Shilea Santiago, said, “We’re trying to get him to come around.” His lawyer’s goal was to clear him of any suspicion in the case. The man had an alibi for the time the young girl went missing, so he was cleared of the crime. He pled guilty to a charge of interfering with a police officer and received a suspended sentence in December of 2003.
After Jason was released for that crime, he told the newspaper the Connecticut Post that he did not know anything about Bianca’s disappearance. His mother told the newspaper the same thing.
Jason was arrested in July of 2011 on unrelated burglary charges.
Jason has a long criminal history, and had been convicted for several crimes before Bianca went missing. He was sentenced to seven years in 1998 for carjacking two elderly women who resided in Fairfield, Connecticut, a town that’s about ten minutes away from Bridgeport. He was released from prison early - he was out by November, 2001, when Bianca went missing.
Police received a tip that Bianca was buried in Seaside Park in Bridgeport. The park is two-and-a-half miles long and crescent shaped. It borders Bridgeport Harbor, Long Island Sound, and Black Rock Harbor. In July of 2009 state and local police dug up large holes in the ground on one side of the park which faced Seabright Avenue and faced the shoreline.
Bianca’s family still lives in the home the girl resided in in 2001.
Bianca’s family kept the presents they were going to give her for Christmas that year, including a set of speakers.
Two of Bianca’s great uncles died two months after she went missing.
Her whole family hopes she is found someday.
Eight months after Bianca disappeared, her family celebrated her eleventh birthday. They lit a single candle for Bianca, and like any other day, waited for word about her. At that time, it had been several weeks since the police got a solid tip about the case.
They also gathered around religious statues and pictures and prayed for Bianca’s safe return.
Bianca’s school put a sign outside to mark the anniversary, but there was no formal observance.
When Police Detective John Burke, a member of the Youth Bureau, took over the case in 2011, there were 50 cardboard boxes filled with reports and notes on the case. He had a large bulletin board filled with photos and recreations of Bianca, Bianca’s family tree (which was prepared by the FBI,) and sketches of possible suspects.
Police Detective John Burke said, “It’s still an open case, we field tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and we get phone calls all of the time. Some people are crazy, but we still have to check them out.”
At one point someone in an internet chat room claimed they saw a picture that looked like Bianca. The police followed the lead to New Mexico, but nothing came of it. “But even the little things like that are investigated,” Police Detective John Burke said.
“She’s got to be somewhere, either dead or alive. I want to believe she is alive, but that’s because I am a positive thinker, but statistically it’s against her being alive. But I want to hope that she is.” Police Detective John Burke says.
In 2014 police again reopened the case.
Wilberto Lebron, Bianca’s father, relocated to Florida after Bianca went missing. He does not let his three other children walk to school, which is only a mile away from his new home. He does not let them ride the school bus. He brings them to school everyday and escorts them inside. He watches them like a hawk. He says, “I am hyper vigilant about looking out for them because of Bianca. I don’t trust anyone. And I won’t let them go on certain school trips - to zoos and museums. My kids lead a solitary life because of what happened to their sister.”
Wilberto used to contact the police twice a week about the case, but his calls eventually dwindled. Carmelita has not given Wilberto her new number, so he can only contact her through her attorney.
“I really think she’s alive somewhere,” Wilberto says, “and the police are not getting cooperation from [Carmelita’s] family. There’s somebody with this secret. Somebody knows something. I feel like it’s in their face and they’re not looking.”
The reward currently being offered in the case is $64,000.
Bianca’s family has suggested from the beginning that Bianca’s case has not gotten much attention because she is Hispanic.
Please contact the Bridgeport Police Department at (203) 581-5100 if you have any information regarding the disappearance of Bianca Elaine Lebron.

History of Dir en grey’s tours
The title may sound presumptuous as this post is nowhere near complete, however I just studied Dir en grey’s whole timeline section and made some interesting discoveries. Some of them might already be common knowledge, especially among Japanese fans, but I doubt the full scale of the connections between older tours and the recent Tour 2016-2017 FROM DEPRESSION TO ___ [mode of X] shows has ever been highlighted.
My curiosity was piqued when the host of the guesthouse I stayed at in Kouchi this summer mentioned that he had remembered that the local newspaper had covered Dir en grey’s concert many, many years ago and that that was why the name rang a bell. I had found Kouchi to be quite a weird place for Dir en grey to tour, not to mention that the tour started there of all places. And then, that MC Die did at the last show in Iga apparently, a place that was very isolated, it seemed; the weird seated venues Dir en grey was playing at in the [mode of MACABRE] tour; those perfect 8月3日木曜日 and 8月5日土曜日 shows; the random locations Dir en grey would visit besides the regular cities; etc. It seemed like too many coincidences.
It turns out that someone among Dir en grey’s team might be doing their best to drop easter eggs from the past within these tribute tours, because:
[mode of MACABRE]
August 26th 1999 - Kouchi Caravan Sarai → July 15th 2017 - Kouchi Prefectural Hall, Orange Hall
Not the perfect example, but Kouchi was first visited around GAUZE - MACABRE, and Dir en grey missed the opportunity to go there again during Tour 2014 PSYCHONNECT -mode of GAUZE?-. The island of Shikoku in general was visited a few times back then, but more rarely in the recent years, if my memory serves right.
January 14th 2001 - Ueno Municipal Hall → August 5th 2017 - Iga City Cultural Center
Thanks to Die for that precision that they came 16 years ago to Iga (and kyotakumrau for reporting his words), otherwise somehow I had not found this hah. The one time Dir en grey went that far, in that remote location, was in 2001 for the tour 00>>01 MACABRE brain gain(er) brain drain(er). Again, too weird a location to end a tour, if there are so few people who travel there that the train only has two wagons. This show was affected by a transfer, in the past.
August 17th 2001 - Grand Cube Osaka → July 17th 2017 - Grand Cube Osaka
August 18th 2001 - Grand Cube Osaka → July 18th 2017 - Grand Cube Osaka
Immediately following the release of 改-KAI-, which contains remixes of MACABRE songs, Dir en grey played twice literally at Grand Cube Osaka. Sixteen years later, they play twice at that venue too, and on the same days one month earlier. Osaka is a very common Dir en grey stop, so I was not expecting to find such a glaring evidence of the connections here. Wow. This was one of the venues I found weird for Dir en grey to be playing at.
[mode of 鬼葬]
Chinese tour 2002 → October 28th 2016 - KITEC Rotunda Hall 3
From what I recall, Hong Kong fans remembered in 2016 that Dir en grey had visited them for 鬼葬 too. On top of that, it was literally in the same venue: Kowloonbay International Exhibition Trading Center. They went out of their way to emulate the 列島激震行脚 2002 -亜細亜- (Archipelago Fierce Episode Gang 2002 - Asia-) The Japanese Fxxker Family tour in at least one venue.
March 6th 2002 - Club Citta Kawasaki -a knot only- →
March 7th 2002 - Club Citta Kawasaki → November 7th 2016 - CLUB CITTA’ [MALE LIMITED] -「a knot」 & ONLINE only-
October 29th 2002 - Club Citta Kawasaki -a knot only- → November 8th 2016 - CLUB CITTA’ [FEMALE LIMITED] -「a knot」 & ONLINE only-
October 30th 2002 - Club Citta Kawasaki -a knot only- →
The abundance of CLUB CITTA shows following the release of the 鬼葬 album (for tours 列島激震行脚 2002 The Japanese Fxxker Family and 列島激震行脚 2002 5 UGLY KINGDOM) has translated into at least two concerts at that venue again for the [mode of 鬼葬] tour, following the tradition of having them be a knot only for the most and going one step further by dividing fans into male and female groups. It was not the first time Dir e grey did this, back in 2002, but they missed the opportunity to replicate that during Tour 2014 PSYCHONNECT -mode of GAUZE?-.
[mode of VULGAR]
October 21st 2003 - Kurashiki City Art Tribe Museum → June 19th 2016 - Kurashiki City Art Tribe Museum
Dir en grey staff is good at publishing banal messages like: “It’s been x years since we played in this venue, wow! Hope to see you all rock out with us again!”, but they do not make you realise exactly when and for what occasion Dir en grey played there. In this case, this is no coincidence: if I remember correctly, this was the only time they went there at all, and it was the first time they had gone to Okayama at all, back in Tour03 OVER THE VULGAR SHUDDER. So, you connect the dots and it makes so much sense that they would return to that location exactly during the tribute tour to the same album.
[mode of THE MARROW OF A BONE]
September 18th 2008 - Miyazaki WEATHERKING → April 29th 2017 - Okinawa Music Town Sound Market
Not that Dir en grey had never before traveled that down south in Japan, but during the tour THE ROSE TRIMS AGAIN in 2008, Dir en grey visited Miyazaki for the first time. As if wanting to push even farther, they went further south in 2017 and played in Okinawa for the first time.
Overall, it really looks like they realised that they missed some occasions during Tour2014 PSYCHONNECT -mode of GAUZE?- and that they tried their best to catch up on that in the tours for albums released close to GAUZE anyway. It makes you wonder if they had planned for the tribute tours back then or if they thought the GAUZE tribute tour would be all and quickly done with.
I know that some of those things are a stretch sometimes, but you do have to take into consideration that booking venues is not easy, and this could be why some regions were ignored or they had to improvise and go with the closest alternative, like in that Miyazaki - Okinawa case. People definitely sat down at a table and agreed to do their best to revisit areas they had ignored for many years, and to reproduce what had been iconic about some of the old tours.
Hopefully not too much of what I mentioned is already written and announced in the Dir en grey fan club magazines, which I have not had the opportunity to translate for myself yet...
Key points for Dir en grey’s tour history globally:
We are so lucky that Kyo has stopped having medical issues. Years 1997 to 2004 or so are punctuated by frequent tonsillitis, hearing loss and other similar illnesses, and Dir en grey had to postpone so many concerts back then. Kyo’s surgery also dates back to so many years, wow.
It was in 2007 that Dir en grey started playing a lot less across Japan. Before that year, the majority of their tours had easily double the number of shows as their current tours do. In 2007, it was due to committing to play across the world, in Europe and in North America, but I do not know what is stopping them from playing in all of Tokyo’s surrounding regions again like in the old days... Hopefully not age hah.
What a journey.
Let me know if you find other parallels!

Top 30 WordPress & ClassicPress Statistics
As of late 2019, The WordPress CMS platform powers an impressive 35% of the world’s websites. So 35% of every website in existence throughout the world uses WordPress as its content management system. WordPress has definitely come a long way since its inception in 2003. Designed to be a blogging solution to meet the needs of those wanting to share their ideas with the world at large, WordPress has long blossomed into so much more. Now, you can publish blog content, run an online business, open up an eCommerce shop, and everything in between. Additionally, ClassicPress, the faster more secure fork of Wordpress, is gaining popularity and heading towards a million download per year. Thanks to the free and open-source nature of this platform, WordPress has grown in popularity over the years and has racked up some pretty remarkable statistics for itself. And today, we’re going to share with you the best WordPress statistics and facts that you can use in your own blog content to establish more authority or just use to impress your friends. So, let’s get started.
1. WordPress dominates the CMS market share
It’s not enough that 35% of all websites use WordPress. In addition, WordPress dominates the content management system market share at 61.7%. This makes it the most popular (and widely used) CMS of all for the 7th year in a row.
2. Big name brands understand the power of WordPress
You may be under the impression that WordPress is only for bloggers and small businesses. But it’s not. In fact, some of the biggest name websites in the world utilize the power, flexibility, and affordability of WordPress. For instance, WordPress powers Facebook Newsroom, Vogue, and The Walt Disney Company, all of which are major corporations with a global presence.
3. To build WordPress was no easy feat
According to Open Hub’s Project Cost Calculator, it took 193 person-years to build WordPress to be what it is today. This includes 718,256 lines of code and over $10 million in expenses.
4. The WordPress platform is always improving
From its launch on May 27, 2003, to just a few days ago on November 12, 2019, there have been 401 updates or brand new version releases of the WordPress core. To say the team behind WordPress cares about new features, security patches, and more is an understatement.
5. People never stop building WordPress websites
As of October of this year, WordPress maintains the number one spot as the fastest growing content management system in the world. Adding to that, 773 WordPress-powered websites are built daily. The next fastest growing CMS is WooCommerce (which is powered by WordPress!) with 381 daily site builds and Shopify in at a measly 193 daily sites.
6. And speaking of WooCommere
27% of eCommerce websites use the WooCommerce platform, which is the free eCommerce plugin that works seamlessly with the WordPress content management system. Behind it are Shopify (18%), Magento (9%), and OpenCart and BigCommerce tying at 3% a piece.
7. WooCommerce holds its own in terms of downloads
If the percentage statistic about WooCommerce above isn’t working for you, maybe the pure, raw data will help. WooCommerce has been downloaded 79,539,671 times and counting.
8. People search for ‘WordPress.org’ a lot
According to Alexa, WordPress.org ranks 716th in global internet engagement. It also boasts a fairly lengthy average time on site per user of 3 minutes. This is pretty good seeing as WordPress.org is mostly a resource website. Other impressive numbers include a bounce rate of 50.9% and the fact that 927,013 sites link to WordPress.org.
9. Web host recommendations are few and far in between
Even though there are thousands of web hosting providers available in the market, WordPress.org only officially recommends 3 web hosts: Bluehost, Dreamhost, and SiteGround.
10. WordPress is linked to much more than a blogging platform
The team behind the open-source WordPress project is also linked to products and services like WordPress.com (the hosted WordPress solution), Akismet, BuddyPress, Gravatar, VaultPress, Simplenote, and of course WooCommerce.
11. WordPress is being actively used by millions
It’s easy to inflate statistics by stating that a piece of software was at one point downloaded a million times, only to find out that the active users of said software is actually much lower. That said, when it comes to live websites using WordPress, you can bet there are over 29 million serving up content to site visitors right this minute.
12. Even new versions of WordPress rake in download numbers in the millions
As of right now, WordPress 5.3 has been downloaded more than 35 million times and counting. If you check out the official WordPress.org counter, you’ll see for yourself. In the time it took me to type these words, the number has jumped to 5,192,671 downloads.
13. When it comes to customization, WordPress is hard to beat
One of the biggest draws the self-hosted WordPress platform has is its ability to be fully customized by people of all skill levels using plugins. And if we’re counting just the official, strictly vetted WordPress plugins found in the Repository, you can find over 55,000 plugins.
14. The WordPress community is just as impressive as the CMS
There have been over 1055 WordCamps spanning 75 cities, 65 countries, and 6 continents since the first WordCamp was organized by Matt Mullenweg in 2006. This robust community of WordPress users working together to network, build, and improve all aspects of WordPress is just another reason why it’s so dang popular.
15. WordCamp numbers never fail to impress
From 2011-2015, there have been 5,856 unique speakers, 7,451 unique sessions, 3,120 unique sponsors of the events, and a whopping 90,000+ tickets sold at worldwide WordCamps. And that was from 4 years ago. Imagine what those numbers would look like now!
16. You’ll find dedication to WordPress at meetup groups
There are over 780,000 WordPress meetup members and 1,600+ groups all over the globe dedicated to meeting up on a regular basis and discuss how you can make the most of your WordPress software.
17. WordPress-related keywords are where it’s at
According to Google Trends, WordPress-related keywords are more popular than terms related to Drupal, blogger, and Sharepoint. In other words, there is a lot of interest in WordPress-related content.
18. Global brands have nothing to lose with WordPress
Thanks to the hardworking translation team over at WordPress.org, WordPress has been fully translated into 55 worldwide languages, with tons more to follow.
19. WordPress Translation Day is a real thing
No, seriously. Every year a bunch of WordPress enthusiasts get together and work on translating the WordPress ecosystem (e.g., the core, themes, and plugins). For twenty-four hours. On a global scale. The most recent WordPress Translation Day boasted 81 worldwide events, 46,653 string translations, and 221 new translators taking part in the fun. Plus, the work performed impacted 71 language locales.
20. Locales (AKA WordPress website locations)
As of now, WordPress’ top locales include the United States (45.6%), Japan (5.7%), Germany (5.5%), Spain (5.1%), and France (3.8%).
21. Part of popular culture
WordPress was featured in episode 5 of Chris Ryan’s Strike Back. And, it was also briefly mentioned on Orange is the New Black, and Lily Allen’s song “URL Badman.” (source)
22. WordPress is a major target and requires proactive security measures
According to one of Sucuri’s latest hack reports, 90% of its security cleanups had to do with WordPress. Of course, much of this is attributable to a lack of security protection, configuration issues, and poor site maintenance. Nonetheless, WordPress is a target because of its popularity. Fortunately at Xhostcom we use ClassicPress which is a more secure version of Wordpress (and faster), for site builds.
23. Vulnerabilities are a thing to contend with
As of right now, there are over 18,000 vulnerabilities in WordPress. 13,000+ of them deal with the WordPress core itself, 2,100+ of them are related to plugins, and 320+ are theme related but ClassicPress removes virtually all the core problems, and is maintained by the ClassicPress team.
24. Themes, themes, themes
When you need to change the look and feel of your WordPress website, you always look to themes first. The most popular themes in the market to date include the premium Avada theme (over 550,000 sales), the premium X theme (over 200,000 sales), and even the free default theme – Twenty Nineteen – which boasts over 1 million active installations.
25. WordPress themes have thousands of lines of code
The popular theme marketplace ThemeFuse claims that each one of its custom WordPress themes has an average of 36,200 lines of code. The comparison used to show you how powerful custom WordPress themes can be is TwentyEleven, having a mere 5,620 lines of code (though that’s still a lot!). Of course, now all themes are the same. But this gives you a good idea.
26. Lots of themes sales doesn’t always = popularity
Though Avada and X have done well, Builtwith will tell you that the top three most popular WordPress themes in use right now are: Divi (14,686 sites), Genesis Framework (11,028 sites), and then Avada (8,344 sites). Of course, these numbers indicate theme usage distribution among the top 1 million sites, but that just goes to show you that sometimes it’s another theme that people actually love.
27. WordPress developers have the potential to do well
When you take a look at PayScale.com, you’ll see that the average salary for a WordPress developer hovers around $50k a year, which isn’t too shabby depending on where you’re located and the cost of living.
28. No matter how hard it tries, spam is blocked
Spam is going to happen no matter how secure your content management system is. That said, if I had to choose a plugin to help me block annoying spam, I’d choose Akismet. Not only is it free, it blocked its 1 billionth spam way back in 2013. Yes, one billionth a.s in ‘B.’ Nowadays, that number is closer to 100 billion. At Xhostcom we have speciality spam system which is 100% effective
29. WordPress stands by it’s open-source reputation
WordPress is not owned by any one company. In fact, co-founder Matt Mullenweg started a non-profit organization called the WordPress Foundation to protect your ability to use the software as you want without restriction. There is also no CEO. Instead WordPress is run by a gamut of volunteer developers from all over the world.
30. WordPress helps you rank
According to Matt Cutts, a man with close ties to Google and its search rankings, WordPress handles 80-90% of the technical aspects related to SEO optimization. In other words, if you want to rank well in search results, WordPress does most of the hard lifting for you. At Xhostcom we have again speciality system for SEO, and you can see some of its features in the video below.
31. WordPress has your back
WordPress promotes freedom of use, modification, distribution, and speech. In fact, WordPress denied 67% of all DMCA takedown notices filed between January 1, 2014 and June 30, 2019 in an effort to preserve people’s freedom to use the platform as they see fit. To put that into perspective, there have been 70,968 takedown notices issued.
Conclusion
As the world’s number one content management system, WordPress has left a huge mark in the digital world and isn’t going anywhere any time soon. It continues to grow, improve, and cater to more website owners each year. Xhostcom use it (or ClassicPress) in bespoke or customized site builds for businesses around the world along with Vue JS and React. And with such a strong community believing in the message behind this open-source, highly customizable, and 100% flexible and affordable software, site owners of all kinds and skill levels will be happy to know more impressive statistics just like the ones above are just around the corner. PR: Jean-Michel Bernard Plays Lalo Schifrin
VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS TO RELEASE JEAN-MICHEL BERNARD PLAYS LALO SCHIFRIN Featuring Performances Of New Arrangements of Schifrin’s Beloved Themes, Played by Acclaimed Pianist/Composer Jean-Michel Bernard (September 18, 2017 – Los Angeles, CA) – The result of a concert performed by Jean-Michel Bernard celebrating the music of legendary composer Lalo Schifrin at the 2016 La Baule Film Music Festival in France, Varèse Sarabande will release a new studio recording of JEAN-MICHEL BERNARD PLAYS LALO SCHIFRIN digitally and on CD October 6, 2017. The album features three piano duets performed by Bernard with Schifrin himself! In addition to this wonderful release, Varèse Sarabande, together with Musicians at Play and Music Fund Los Angeles, will be celebrating the 85th birthday of Schifrin with a special concert on October 7th in Los Angeles, at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale (concert details: http://bit.ly/2h8cyXO). Lalo Schifrin calls Jean-Michel Bernard his ‘soul brother.’ The two first met over 25 years ago, but it wasn’t until they were reacquainted in 2016 that they would strike up a musical friendship. Schifrin was the guest of honor at the 2016 La Baule Film Music Festival. Bernard was asked to give a tribute concert to celebrate the Maestro, and re-orchestrated Lalo’s themes for the performance. Though not originally scheduled to – Bernard invited Lalo to join him on stage and the two played 35 minutes of amazing improvisations, culminating in Schifrin’s beloved “Mission: Impossible”.
“After a Dirty Harry Blues duo with Pierre Boussaguet, he launched into a wild piano duel with Jean-Michel on Happy Birthday—it really was Boussaguet's birthday—before ending on a white-hot reprise of Mission: Impossible… thirty-five minutes later!” described the French journalist Stéphane Lerouge. “The audience, fully aware that they had witnessed a historic happening, gave them a standing ovation that stopped the clock. Inspired by the music of Schifrin and determined to recreate the historic moment by recording his arrangements for this album, Jean-Michel began recording this album – featuring Lalo’s beloved music from Mannix, Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, The Cincinnati Kid, The Cat, the Dirty Harry Suite (featuring composer – and Clint’s son – Kyle Eastwood on electric bass), plus a melodic trip to Lalo’s roots with pieces like Lalo’s Bossa Nova and Tango Del Atardecer. After an initial recording session in France, Lalo invited Jean-Michel to Los Angeles to record a series of duets at the legendary Capitol Studios where Lalo would join him for three pieces. “Jean-Michel reserved two pieces for him [Lalo], each for two pianos: Chano (originally written for Gillespie), and a lengthy introduction to The Plot, like some fantasy joust nourished on jubilant quotes,” wrote Lerouge. “He also built up an original suite combining Recuerdos from Che! (with a baguala rhythm) and the love theme from The Four Musketeers in Renaissance style, forming a made-to-measure piece for Sara Andon, a stunning New World classical flautist. These three piano duets, performed by Lalo and Jean-Michel, can be heard on this album: Introduction to The Plot, Chano, and The Cheketeers Suite.” Take a musical adventure with this delightful new recording JEAN-MICHEL BERNARD PLAYS LALO SCHIFRIN. Perhaps Schifrin himself summed it up best, "In La Baule, it was a magnificent child. From now on, it's an adult." Track Listing 1. Mannix 2. Bullitt 3. Cool Hand Luke 4. Dirty Harry Suite 5. Lalo's Bossa Nova 6. Mission: Impossible 7. That Night 8. Tango Del Atardecer 9. The Cat 10. Les Felins 11. The Cincinnati Kid 12. Introduction To The Plot 13. The Plot 14. Cheketeers Suite 15. At 19, he recorded with the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, whilst pursuing a career as a jazz musician and performing with prominent jazz artists including Wild Bill Davis, Jimmy Woode (Duke Ellington’s bassist) and Eddie Davis. From 1987 to 1991 he worked as musical director and conductor of the successful radio show “L’Oreille en Coin” on National Pubic Radio France Inter. Between 2000 and 2003, he performed with the Ray Charles Quartet on the European and Australian tours as organist and conductor, “this guy is a genius, he is extraordinary” Ray used to say concerning Jean-Michel Bernard. He also scored many documentaries and commercials during the 90’s. His career as a composer began with animated films, followed by collaborations with masters such as Lalo Schifrin and Ennio Morricone. He frequently works with director Michel Gondry and has composed songs and scores for films including Human Nature and The Science of Sleep, which screened at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals. He was nominated for the World Soundtrack Awards in 2007 as Discovery of the Year and won the France Musique/UCMF award at the Cannes Film Festival the same year. In 2008 he scored the music for Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind, Cash by Eric Besnard, and A Pain in the Ass by Francis Veber. The same day Be Kind Rewind was shown at the Sundance Festival, Jean-Michel Bernard performed alongside rapper/singer Mos Def and Gondry, an avid drummer. The following year, the Cannes Film Festival invited him to represent France in the film music concert program. He also received an award for his achievement outside of his native country from the European Union of Film Music Composers (UCMF) and was appointed as sound designer for both HBO’s channel and website. He has collaborated with French actress and director Fanny Ardant on two of her films Chimères Absentes and Cadences Obstinées starring Gerard Depardieu and worked on Academy Award winning Hugo by Martin Scorsese. He scored the music of Love Punch by Joel Hopkins starring Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson, Love at First Child by Anne Giafferi and Money by Georgian director Gela Babluani. Bernard has conducted master classes at the Cannes Film Festival as well as in Montreal, Angers, La Rochelle, Krakow, Cologne and in Aubagne, where he performed a live version of “Jazz For Dogs”, an album co-created with Kimiko Ono and featuring a number of prestigious guests including Fanny Ardant, Francis Lai and Laurent Korcia. In 2014, Jean-Michel Bernard began teaching film music classes at the Paris Conservatory and was guest of honor with Michael Giacchino at the Audi Talent Awards in Paris with the Paris Symphonic Orchestra, at Braunschweig Festival and at Soundtrack Cologne Festival. He scored “Terra”, a contemporary dance project which premiered at the Coronet in London in March 2016 and participated as composer, arranger and performer on The Avalanches long-awaited second album Wildflower. His most recent project is an album celebrating the legendary Lalo Schifrin entitled Jean-Michel Bernard plays Lalo Schifrin which includes 3 piano duets with the master himself. The album will be released in 2017 with concerts in Los Angeles, Paris, and Japan, at the Tokyo Blue Note Jazz Festival. "To me it is amazing that I found a real 'soul brother' in the sum of his expressions (composing, conducting, performing, etc.). I cannot find words to reflect my admiration for his genius, a real miracle because he is my double." (Lalo Schifrin). ABOUT LALO SCHIFRIN Lalo Schifrin is a true Renaissance man. As a pianist, composer and conductor, he is equally at home conducting a symphony orchestra, performing at an international jazz festival, scoring a film or television show, or creating works for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the London Philharmonic and even The Sultan of Oman. As a young man in his native Argentina, Lalo Schifrin received classical training in music, and also studied law. He came from a musical family, and his father, Luis Schifrin, was the concertmaster of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires at the Teatro Colon. Lalo Schifrin continued his formal music education at the Paris Conservatory during the early 1950’s. Simultaneously, he became a professional jazz pianist, composer and arranger, playing and recording in Europe. When Schifrin returned to Buenos Aires in the mid 1950’s, he formed his own big concert band. It was during a performance of this band that Dizzy Gillespie heard Schifrin play and asked him to become his pianist and arranger. In 1958, Schifrin moved to the United States and thus began a remarkable career. His music is a synthesis of traditional and twentieth-century techniques, and his early love for jazz and rhythm are strong attributes of his style. “Invocations,” “Concerto for Double Bass,” “Piano Concertos No. 1 and No. 2,” “Pulsations,” “Tropicos,” “La Nouvelle Orleans,” and “Resonances” are examples of this tendency to juxtapose universal thoughts with a kind of elaborated primitivism. In the classical composition field, Schifrin has more than 60 works. To date, Lalo Schifrin has written over 100 film and television scores including Mission Impossible, Mannix, Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, The Cincinnati Kid, Amityville Horror, four of the Dirty Harry films, and more recently Abominable and the Rush Hour trilogy. Lalo Schifrin has now won five Grammys® (twenty-two nominations), one Cable ACE Award, and six Academy Award® nominations (for Cool Hand Luke, The Fox, Voyage of the Damned, The Amityville Horror, The Competition, and The Sting II). His longtime involvement in both the jazz and symphonic worlds came together in 1993 as pianist and conductor for his on-going series of “Jazz Meets the Symphony” recordings. Press Release:
Galerie Chantal Crousel is pleased to present Mona Hatoum’s 7th solo exhibition, from October 12 to December 21, 2019.
New sculptures, installations, and works on paper are presented.
Mona Hatoum’s art reflects on world conflicts, migrations, and surveillance, using materials as varied as steel, brick, concrete, and human hair, in order to create spaces of tension, paradox, and ambiguity. The motif of the grid and the sphere serve as metaphors for confinement, oppression, and destruction.
The artist articulates these issues through the use of abstraction and poetic Realism which enables her to reach a certain universality and become one of the most influential figures of her generation, as well as a role model for many contemporary artists.
From the point of creation to the placement of the work in the space, Mona Hatoum focuses her attention on the viewer’s body and on the precise moment when he or she encounters the work. Mingling the theme of everyday life with that of global instability, the artist creates a feeling of discomfort. Due to the familiarity of the forms and the poetics of the materials, Mona Hatoum’s works are attractive and irrepressibly lure the eye. Our attention is however disrupted when we approach the work as it reveals harsher and more precarious characteristics than is expected. Consider Remains (chair) V, a piece of furniture reduced to its ghostly charred remains, held together by wire mesh. This chair, a shadow of its former self, no longer suggests a refuge or comforting interior, but points to an alarming and disturbing situation.
The desire of the artist to combine geopolitical problematics with esthetical considerations leads to major works such as Concrete Mobile, Orbital II or Hot Spot (stand).
Hot Spot (stand) is a metal globe, wrapped in neon tube emitting a mesmerizing glowing red light. When approaching the work, one feels a sensation of heat and hears an unfamiliar electric buzz. Emblematic of Mona Hatoum’s work, the geographical map is here presented as a statement for a world embroiled in conflict and a territory in flux. For Orbital II, Mona Hatoum uses materials borrowed from the construction industry: the curved steel rebar forms a globe punctuated by clumps of concrete that also look like orbiting planets. Concrete Mobile is composed of the same elements this time suspended overhead. The precarious suspension of the concrete blocks suggests the erosion of a building that was once solid, down to a skeleton of fragments. Mona Hatoum produces a metaphor of a fragile world that is in a permanent state of destruction, while providing the key to a possible reconstruction. A Pile of Bricks also uses building materials. It consists of a pile of bricks that resemble a mobile architectural model and suggests a partially collapsed building with a caved-in façade.
The spatial relationships created by Mona Hatoum between those powerful works and the visitor generates a genuine visceral experience.
The grid is another theme explored in this exhibition. It initially became a recurring theme because of her interest in Minimalism and geometry. But the grid pattern has gradually evolved into a reference to real-life situations related to confinement. In a serial approach, Mona Hatoum repeats the motif in drawings on parchment paper entitled Drawing Heat. She produces a freehand drawing with a hot metal rod creating a form by removing material from the surface of the paper. For untitled (bed springs) I & II, an organic grid shape emerges. These lithographs were produced by using bedsprings, removed from the frame and applied directly to the stone, creating a variation on the classical form of the regular, geometric grid – which then seems to evaporate and evoke a possible liberation.
The body is the starting point for much of the artist’s commentary on the state of the world. However, it may also be the object. Since early days, Mona Hatoum explored the interiority of the body, often revealing its deepest intimacy. With some humor, while still seeking to elicit contradictory emotions, the artist once again uses the sphere in the work entitled Inside Out (concrete), whose surface pattern is reminiscent of the meanderings of the digestive system. In other sculptures, the artist incorporates materials discarded from her own body: a necklace made out of her own fingernails is displayed on a wooden bust (Nail Necklace) and for Silver Ball, rolled hair forms a large ball that is placed on a pedestal like a precious object. Other small works on paper created with hair punctuate the exhibition and encourage proximity between the artist and the visitor.
Lastly, SP Atelier extends an invitation to enter a wholly different sort of privacy, that of the artist’s studio. Mona Hatoum displays a set of drawings, photographs, embroideries, and other objects, collected during her residency in São Paulo in 2014. The elements that make up this installation are samples or preparatory sketches for pieces that emerged in São Paulo and were later presented in the exhibition that concluded the residency. The piece takes us behind the scenes of an artistic practice developing outside any fixed studio location, drawing sustenance from local materials and know-how.
As Clarrie Wallis wrote, “[Mona Hatoum] is highly sophisticated in her manipulation of materials and their metaphorical potential and, […] it is in her interface between these that the work’s meaning resides.”` The visitor’s space is filled with tensions between form and content, medium and thought, latent poetry thus resulting, constitutes the strength of the artist’s work.
In 2019, Mona Hatoum has been awarded the Praemium Imperiale prize for Sculpture, submitted by Japan Art Association, the most historical cultural foundation in Japan.
She was presented with a number of other prizes during her career, such as the 10th Hiroshima Art Prize by Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (2017), Joan Miró Prize of the Fundació Joan Miró (2011), Honorary Doctorate from the University of Southampton (2010), or Roswitha Haftmann Stiftung Prize (2004) among others.
In 2015, her exhibition at the Centre Pompidou Paris travelled to Tate London, then to the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki (2016).
Her work has been shown in several solo exhibitions, in institutions such as the Menil Collection, Houston, U.S.A. (2017) that toured to Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St Louis, U.S.A. (2018); Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan (2017); Fundación PROA, Buenos Aires, Argentina (2015); Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo, Brazil (2014); Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent, Belgium (2014); Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, Qatar (2014); Kunstmuseum St-Gallen, Switzerland (2013); Arter, Istanbul, Turkey (2012); Juan Miro Fundacion, Barcelona, Spain (2012); Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China (2009); Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice, Italy (2009); Museum of contemporary art, Sydney, Australia (2005); Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany (2004), Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany (2004), Magasin III, Stockholm, Sweden (2004); Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca, Mexico (2003); Centro de Arte de Salamanca, Spain (2002).
